Prepare a list of your personal/business property and include the date, place and cost of purchase. Include receipts if available and keep in a plastic bag and store in a waterproof container. Email a copy to yourself or family members for safe keeping.

Keep your insurance policy, important documents, photographs and the above sealed in plastic bags and store in a water proof container or plastic bin.  You can also scan them and store them in the cloud, on a zip drive or SD card and/or email them to yourself and family members so you will all have a digital copy.

Prepare an emergency contact list of important names and telephone numbers and include police, hospital, doctors, veterinarian, pharmacy, medical insurance information and homeowner insurance policy information. Email this to yourself and family members.

FOUR THINGS YOU SHOULD DO AFTER YOUR PROPERTY IS DAMAGED BY A CATASTROPHIC WINDSTORM OR OTHER INSURED LOSS

After a hurricane or windstorm check for downed powerlines and avoid them. If you have trees that have fallen on your property, get assistance with removing them to avoid injury or contact with active powerlines that can be hidden by the tree.​

Photograph or video any and all damaged areas and personal property to your home or business prior to discarding any damaged items. ​

Keep records of your insurance claim and write down the date of contact and the person you spoke with at your insurance company.  It’s always a good idea to keep a claim diary of events including phone calls, inspections and other communications with your insurance company.  This will be helpful later.​
